Vocals in the "Trad" Tradition (20's, Early 30's)

Some people say that "scat singing" originated when Louis Armstrong dropped his music, maybe in 1926.  Well, who knows?  By 1928, there were some great scat singers, and you can hear George Thomas singing "Tight Like That" right now. !

Here are some other early scat singers that just knock me out.  You can scan down thru these on the player by using the controls on the Windows Player.  Or, click on the name to go to a page dedicated to them.

1. McKinney's Cotton Pickers.  "It's Tight Like That" (playing) was written by Thomas A. Dorsey, who later wrote "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and numerous other Gospel favorites.  Dorsey was apologetic about ITLT, altho it sold 7 million copies!  For more on Dorsey, look here.

2. The Rhythm Boys.  Bing and the boys put Paul Whiteman on the map.  This tune (Nmbr 2 on the player below) is my favorite in my collection but you can see more here

3. The Boswell Sisters grew up in New Orleans, and learned how to sing scat at an early age.  I love everything they do.  This selection (Nmbr 3) is the title tune from my collection.

4. The Mills Brothers started out by imitating instruments with their voices, but they were GREAT at inserting a scat chorus where it belonged.  Tiger Rag was their first hit, and the Title Song of my collection.  Eventually, they sold 50 million records!
