McKinney's Cotton Pickers
Obviously, this band, like almost all of the bands in the 20's, was not
"integrated." The band was directed by Don Redman, who wrote most of
their arrangements. There are a lot of their tunes here at RedHotJazz.
Their (very brief) Wikipedia writeup is here.
"Four or five times" was their most famous tune; you can listen here.
The tune you're listening to is "Cherry"
-- written by Don Redmond. The phrasing of the choruses is very reminiscent
of Bix Beiderbecke -- one of my idols.
The double entendre is typical of the lyrics
of the newly liberated 20's.
"Cherry, Cherry, you're hard to
get...
Cherry, Cherry, I'll get you
yet!"
If you like comparisons, here's my
favorite version of this song, by Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker.
I have two albums by the Cotton Pickers, Classics and Zonky.
You can get a good buy on Zonky here.
