WLS Radio in Chicago.
Originally owned by Sears, Roebuck in Chicago (WLS stood for
"World's Largest Store") and was the home of "The National Barn
Dance" -- second only to "The Grand Opry" as a home for a host of
wonderful performers, including Gene Autry, Les Paul (performing as
"Rhubarb Red"), and George Goebel.
WLS was (and still is) a "Clear Channel Station" --
a station which operates at 50,000 Watts on a frequency with no competition.
Such channels dominated AM radio for 40 years, and were a night-time inspiration
to millions of would-be musicians living in the Heartland with no local
musicians or clubs.
Off shore, or south of the border, several stations operated
at 100,000 watts, generating such a strong signal that they became Clear Channel
Stations.
Wiki has an interesting compilation of facts about WLS here.
