"Milenberg (Milneberg) Joys" (written
by Jelly Roll
Morton)
Milneberg was a town on the shores of Lake Ponchartrain. It
eventually became a part of New Orleans. The song refers to the Milneberg
Hotel situated there, and the joys that could be found
within!!!
The song was originally played quite slowly, as you can hear
here in RedHotJazz. (New
Orleans Rhythm Kings...you'll have to look down the page.)
McKinney's Cotton Pickers (1928) speeded it up to the tempo
it deserves! Click on "play" (the arrow) on the player below to
listen. McKinney's start with the verse. This is a WONDERFUL
version, with lots of stops and splash cymbal. (Of course, it is my
favorite!)
Lu Watters (1942) picked it up and put it back in everyone's repertoire.
(Second selection on the player) They skip the verse and get right into
it.
Firehouse Five version (third selection) was the first one
that I heard, recorded in the 60's. It is a take-off from Lu's
version.
Finally, a vocal version by Dr. John in the 90's, which slows
the tune back down to its original tempo.
