King Oliver and Louis Armstrong

Louis played "Second Trumpet" to King Oliver, who taught him everything about small group jazz.  He went on to form the "Hot Five" and "Hot Seven" that defined Chicago Dixieland.  Notice the string bass in the picture!  The tuba was gone, never to return.

I've included a couple of standards that I especially like.

1. Chimes Blues

2. Dippermouth Blues

Elsewhere, you can listen to "Cakewalking Babies from Home."
